Hi, I'm new to the forum, and just posted a question about this, I guess in the wrong forum spot. However, I've had a couple of experiences with Frank's Box, or the Ghost Box as it is also called. As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out. It seems pretty random to me. However, at a recent visit to Hirum Scutt Mansion in Joliet, IL, we tried it out. My name is Barb. When asking the "box" whom it wanted to speak to, it said Barbara. There were actually two of us by that name. The guy who asked the question, was Ed Shanahan, of Unexplained World, in Chicago. He asked the box who was talking, and twice it said Ed. One experience prior to this, as Ed shared, was that he was sitting on a bed in a location, and the bed broke. When the box was asked who broke the bed, it is reported that the reply was "Ed, Ed, Ed broke the bed." Unfortunately I wasn't present for that visit, so I cannot verify it first hand.

I think there's something to the technology but, like you said, it's up in the air still. The idea of using the radio frequencies as a source of white noise for spirit to build a voice on is very interesting and people have been experimenting for years with white noise and similar stuff with EVP.

It was Hulk Hogan. Brother!!!

They say you get get something similar at radio shack? does that mean you buy the parts and make it yourself..or is the thing like sold as a kit? I guess I'm a bit confused here..

You buy a choice of 2 different radio shack radios and open them up and perform a simple clip and it scans constantly.

Well we have our "Radio Shack hack " Franks Box and we will be experimenting with it at our next investigation in November so I hope to be able to update you all on how it works.

On sites that sell the Ovilus http://www.digitaldowsing.com/Ovilus1.htm They state on the PDF Manual that it is for entertainment purposes and there are no guarantees that you can talk to spirits. They also point out that the human mind can matrix and hear what you want to hear, not what is actually being said. Now with that said there are some people that will swear by them and along with the Franks box swear by them. Me personally, I think its matrixing while maybe fun to play with I wouldn't use one at a serious investigation unless testing at training locations proved it works. I will wait until something better comes along. There are new gadgets popping up all over. I have seen the microphone and amp you use to talk to them and a separate microphone and amp they can use to talk back that looks worthwhile looking at. It converts your voice to waves and frequencies allows them to talk back being amplified.

Just my Opinion

Something above and beyond Franks box ....... and its still in testing mode but available to the public starting november 1st for only $299.00
Paranormal Systems has released the second version of their Mini-Box, called the Mini-Box Plus to the ASUP after our six month study of the original design. The new box is completely digital, effectively eliminating all extraneous noise while automatically enhancing weak signals and equalizing stronger ones.

The new Mini-Box PLUS scans digitally, controlled by an internal microprocessor with five different scan modes possible to allow for the best individual preferences. The unit automatically eliminates dead spots in the scan, and can be set to optimize any location, city, and country, in valleys and on mountaintops. The unit also has programmable user memories, so once you find your perfect listening settings, you can save them to the internal memory. And the new power circuit allows operations while charging.

The ASUP will begin testing the latest version of the Mini-Box early next month and their findings will be updated to include this new technology. Our first look at the device last week was interesting to say the least. Even those who like the Frank’s Box type audio will be pleased with the new Mini, which has one setting to emulate Frank’s design. For those who want a more smooth output, there are several to choose from, if anything we expect that some people will complain the Mini Plus is just too quiet in these modes, but for the rest of us, the additional modifications are very welcome and seen as one step closer to true communications.

Originally the ASUP undertook the design of the first box, simply because no one would lend us a Frank’s box for testing. Since designing the first generation Mini, Ron Ricketts, our director of R&D has undertaken the redesign of the system into something far above the others, even Frank Sumption says so. Never the less, we are reviewing this and every other device with an open mind and room for skepticism. We are not saying that this or any other box is truly communicating with anyone, but we can say that electronically, the Mini-Plus is the best out there for the moment, with innovations that are far above the others. Our testing and research on “who” is communicating through all of these devices continues with public testing, but it will be some time before we will be ready to issue a report on the overall communications being reported. Nevertheless, we have to admit to some spectacular responses while testing the device and while strictly anecdotal for the moment, they were amazing to hear.
To hear samples

Yeah that Ovilus thing is a strange little thing.

Eric, let us know what results you come up with. I still have yet to put together one of those radio shack hacks. I'm still fascinated by the idea of the Franks Box.

And that 299.00 thing sounds interesting too. I feel in the next couple of years there's going to be a boom in some new paranormal equipment. I think some people are ready to see a change and are starting to get some new ideas brewing.

Hey Eric,
I probably wouldn't be testing it at an investigation where clients will be attending. Being its new and your team has what will be limited experience with it, I would recommend training at a nuetral location, ( a controlled location) maybe somewhere you have caught evidence prior. where you can work with it a few times or more and try to verify by researching the answers the box is giving you. A home owner could become severly frightened by its responses. Just my opinion. We test all of our equipment several times prior to taking it to an investigation, whether its a camera or dvr. We just purchased 2 k2 meter's you better believe we are heading out to perecheney to test them out, several trips to Perecheney. My equipment tech built the Franks box from schematics found online, we never used it or tried it out, we learned that no 2 radios onced unlocked to scan the channels are at the same speed, so we debunked it for use with our team. . As some radios at a slower speed are more apt to pick up signal longer. Again just my thoughts.
Take care,

Yeah, good advice. I could see where a client might be spooked by it, especially if it's a case where the people are spooked out to start with.

Yeah thanks for the advice Matt , I am VERY VERY skeptical of the "franks box" so until I am 100% sure of it I would never stand behind it as evidence. As for the K2 meters beware if you use walkies we found they can set off the K2 pretty easily so try to keep the two apart .

Had that on the list for trying, Beleive me no equipment we use goes untested.
But thanks, its good to see that other teams try their equipment before ever using at an investigation.
Take care,
